Being Weyrwoman was never exactly an easy task. Kaelu knew it even before Kyrieth strode past the other girls and looked to her and her alone. She knew it when none of the other girls had. She most certainly knew it now. It was all fine and dandy if you were just sitting along doing your usual clean and feed dragon, check riding straps, and whatever else you were assigned to, but they did not know the weight of the Weyr like she did. And of course she had made a decision and was sticking to it by keeping the Southerners here and inside the Weyr. Her idea behind that was this way she could assign two riders to the Southerners to keep watch over them and not let them take liberty of her hospitality. Better to watch them then let them just roam free.
She dunked her head under the heavily steaming water and just held her breath there. She had already seen to it that they were assigned empty Weyrs all near each other but surrounded by her own riders. They were given what they needed for their stay and had wrangled up some clothing for them all so they needn't stay in what they had the entire time. She had even gone to the extent of welcoming them to the Weyr and introducing them to their pacifiers. Kaelu thought she was doing a fine job in inter-Weyr relations.
That did not mean half a nod to any of the older riders though. They were all stuck to their stones stubborn. None of them thought her job was hard. They all thought she just checked lists and took care of the mother dragon. It was not so. Later today she was going to go to the infirmary to check on their ailing guest and those of the Weyr itself who were not up to par. There were stocks to discuss with the Weyr's Master Healer and time to see about replenishing any of it. Then she was thinking of visiting the creche since the Headwoman had mentioned that they needed a quick visit. If she could convince T'ran to come with her, she could show him the regular people of the Weyr who depended on the riders. She could show him their families and possibly win his heart over a little bit in her favor.
Winning the hearts of others was never an easy task.
She rose back up and sputtered a little as she breathed in. Kaelu could feel her lungs aching from the pressure of holding her breath, but it helped her to think clearly and shove off the unnecessary stress. What was it that Delia had told her? Ah yes, it would take some time, several turns, before everyone would truly accept her as Weyrwoman. It was just the nature of things. Some people didn't like change and the older they were the more likely they were to be that way and the less responsibility they had the more likely they thought that they could do a better job.
"Let them walk from Benden College to the Weyr in my boots and see if they think they can do better than I then." Kaelu said in defiance, but now she felt a little better and she began to scrub up.
