A wild yell pierced the calm of the lake as Rae spiraled through the air; down, down, down into the cleaning waters for a cool bath. She had worked hard all day and felt she deserved some play and rest. The water enveloped her, closing over her feet as she lost her sight to white bubbles and blue water. The lake cleaned the grime from her body as she swam, only a long shirt she had worn beneath her tunic pressing against her and soaking with water. Rae watched the blue scene in front of her for a few moments before breaching the surface for a gasping, wonderful breath. Her bright eyes scanned the far edge of the lake for anyone around. Finding nobody, Rae chose her fate: she splashed around like a little girl, all the while washing the dust free of her hair, skin, and mind. Her mind was clouded with “dust”, her father used to call it, the mini-stresses of a long day. The after-supper sun hung low and warm in the sky. Red streaked the calm water, only disturbed by her rippling splashes.
The girl’s brown hair was a halo radiating from her scalp as she floated gently on her back. Slightly tired from her frantic antics, she was content to watch the clouds as they morphed shape before her lazy gaze. The water was her bed as she drifted into her semi-conscious daydream-state. Her thoughts wandered, the Hatching once again filling her mind’s eye. The now commonplace hum entered her ears; but today it was the water filling them as she floated, making her all the more immersed. The sight of the mound of eggs and the gold-and-scale backdrop of a humming Queen were vivid, but thin and specked with the sky that her earthbound self stared blankly at.
Softness closed as the sun sank a whole candle below where it was. A few insect-like beings flitted over the surface of the water, being snatched by the marine life beneath the surface of the water. Packtail swam beneath the floating young woman, nibbling at the edges of her shirt and causing her to “come to“ as she reached the point of her dream she always did: the hatching eggs. A bit disappointed and irked, the girl dove beneath the surface, scaring all the fish away.
Rae popped up only to see something… someone else… and didn’t know what to think.
