Give Us A Portrait
Appearance: Framing her face is a mess of brown hair, cropped to just above her shoulders. That face houses a pair of giant forest-hued eyes that seem to know more than someone of sixteen turns should, always bright and intelligent beneath a pair of expressive, thin eyebrows and a set of long lashes. A small, kissable nose sits beneath her eyes, separated from them with a thin bridge. The lips that fall beneath her nose are rose-hued, perfectly shaped and as expressive as her eyes. Her body is thin and doe-like. Rae is not quite tall, not quite short for her age, about 4'6".
She always seems to be tanned, which gives way to a few freckles here and there on her rosy cheeks. Her demeanor is that of a confident woman, stance tall and erect, a "don't mess with me" look on her face if crossed. This young woman's gait is strong and meaningful. Rae's arms rest crossed in front of her when she is resting, a habit she had contracted from her father. This stance is often misconstrued as being defiant.
On her arms there are little scar marks, where she has picked at the little white bumps that appear there.
Personality: Rae is a fiery young spirit with a hard-working attitude. She is all woman and no pushover, working until she gets her way. Although the rosy-faced woman seems as if she would be social, she is no butterfly. She thinks of it as a waste of time to have so many friends when there is so much work to be done. Rae can be so focused on what she is doing that she snaps at people who interrupt her, causing them small hurts or to yell back. It isn't something she wants to do, and she apologizes for it, but all the same she can be snappy when she is interrupted.
Her love of work also gives her an insatiable curiosity when it comes to knowledge. She will ask anything at any time to any person she thinks can answer the inquiry, often surprising them. She manages to get her hands on books or scrolls when she can, but she prefers to get it from people with life experience. Among her favorite people to ask are Dragon Riders. She has always found good information from them and finds their tales fascinating. Although she has run in to a bad few that make her more wary now, One day she wishes to have tales like those of the Riders and knowledge to match, as well as the ability to stop this war and whip those Southern Riders in to shape so that no more girls get hurt.
Behind the hard-working woman, though, is a helpful and sweet girl. Rae is very loving of the few she is close to and always willing to help them. She can not deny her few friends and family when they need her strength and help. Rae is the sort that would make a good psychologist; She is a person you would want to confide in. That is just what her twin siblings used to do. She helped them when they saw their first herdbeast slaughter, when they witnessed their first birthing, and if they fell and scraped their knees as they worked in the fields. She would help them, they would confide even the littlest secrets in her. Diplomacy was a key aspect to learn, as the young ones used to fight often. She learned quickly and efficiently dispose of arguements for a more favorable outcome.
History: Young Rae is a farmer's daughter from Ruatha Hold. She grew up with a host of family to guide and grow her. She learned about life from her family's business; witnessed birth and death occur every day as her family raised the herdbeasts that would become food for the huge dragons that protected her home. Rae's hard-working attitude came from this life. She was up early and down late, only after the beasts were tucked away and fed. She never had a day of rest. When she could find time between dinner and bed, though, there were tales to tell that she had heard when she took the beasts to the Northern Weyr.
One time, though, the tale wasn't something to look forward to hearing.
On the way home from a Gathering, where she sold some of her Father's beasts, the only one she had left managed to get loose and meandered off. Of course, Rae had to catch it and bring it back. It took her hours, but she managed to locate the beast and slowly was beginning to sneak up on it. Her eyes grew wider than ever, two moons in her head, as she sighted the huge shadows circling the beast and Farmer's Daughter. She stood to run, but only managed to stumble back to her knees as the Southern Men's dragons landed, dusting up the air and scaring off the herdbeast.
Rae was powerless against the advancing men, thought she tried to fight them off. The laughter and screams played well in to the night, and Rae left the camp in the morning. She was covered in grit and grime, as well as bruises and blood. She did carry, as well as the gruesome memories that make her more wary, a reason to care about the war. Southern Riders would submit to the North, and she would be one to help. Her secret would be carried to the day she died, she knew, but it would be her hidden drive to become that which was twice as hard for women than men. She would become a Rider. Maybe even of a gold... so she could merge the North and South so she could whip those Southerners in to shape.
As soon as she could, Rae entered herself in to the Candidacy, leaving Ruatha Hold and the Farm behind. Her Sixteenth Turn coming to a close in about four months, Rae found herself transplanted from Farm to Weyr. One thing was always certain, though: This woman would not be a servant to men. She would become equal. Who knows? Maybe she would work hard enough to surpass and become a leader?
