s Ildessmor waited for the other girl's reaction, she picked up a glass of wine herself. Sipping from the glass, she glanced around herself, wondering where on earth the man had gone. Upon hearing the other girl speak, she turned her attention back to her. Thank goodness she was taking Ildessmor's warning seriously, she thought, nodding her head. It was more of a warning for you actually, she said, hesitating a bit. she finished, looking back at the girl. The man that she had encountered outside on the weyr face seemed to be the manipulative type, one that would twist things to fit his life, even if it meant destroying others in his way. Thank goodness his dragon had a good conciousness on him. Otherwise, the rider and dragon could be a serious threat to the weyr. H earing the other girl's comment about the other girl's wanting to leave, she raised and eyebrow and smiled playfully. Who said I was going anywhere? she asked, teasing the other girl. And in all honestly, Ildessmor really wasn't planning on leaving anytime soon. Her father could provide for her, even if she lived so far away. He could send clothing and jewelry and whatnot, while she stayed in the weyr and out of her father's control. I'm staying unless I get kicked out by somebody. she concluded, looking the other girl in the eye. After all, what was waiting for her back home? An arranged marriage to a wealthy man who cared nothing about her? Yeah, that would be a fantastic life, now wouldn't it?J ust then, the man re-appeared, as if he had re-materialized from thin air. Willing herself not to flinch or anything, she paused for a moment, neutralizing her expression before turning her face back towards the two people standing in front of her. This had been the first time since the incident that she had even tried to hold a conversation with the man. However, it would be good for him to see that she wasn't about to run away like a little dog with it's tail between it's legs, she was going to stand up to him and fight him if necessary. Now who would have expected that from a little proper hold bred girl?[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

In someone that she wanted around, Siten would expect nothing less than Ildessmor's calm and confident performance, and it, and the girl's confident responses to her comments and the composed manner in which she kept herself beside the pair as they spoke raised her opinion of her a few notches. A plan began to bud to life in the young woman's mind as she awaited a reply from D'mon, but she would need to catch Ildessmor alone, later, to even begin it, and that was the crux of the matter, wasn't it? Of course, it was about then that she realized she didn't even know the younger girl's name, but that was easily enough rectified, and she twisted back toward Ildessmor to add, "By the way, I remember when you were searched--I was there, too, if you don't recall--but I never did catch your name. I'm Siten, if I forgot to say."

D'mon listened attentively to Siten and didn't have to think about his answer, for once. The Weyr did seem understaffed at times and there was laways the need of folk to do menial labor. "Of course Weyrwoman Siten.Candidates should be allowed to stay. Those that do stay prove themselves as capable riders in my opinion. If you really want something, you must be determined and you show that through hard work.It would also save time on conditioning and assimilating them to Weyr life." The bronze rider was still aggitated that the blonde was still there.Didn't she have something else to do,because Siten obviously wasn't going to question D'mon about the almost rape.

"I'm glad you agree," Siten replied with a bright, even smile to D'mon. "Then I trust I'll have your support in encouraging those candidates who did not impress to stay with the Weyr for our next clutch? We've plenty of room, and I'm sure everyone would welcome the company, and the help." She was testing him and she knew it, but she would need to know the measure of her riders--especially her bronzeriders--if she was to run the Weyr at all effectively, and there were few enough of them that she would need excellent measure of those she did have.
(I'm blanking, right now, so consider this a WIP unless you really wanna reply to it.)

ldessmor gave the other girl a quick smile before sipping her glass of punch once more. Hearing the older girl's question, she glanced back at her. Oh, my name is Ildessmor. she said, smiling. She also remembered the other girl, and from what Ildessmor remembered, she had already been searched when Ildessmor was searched. Then again, Ildessmor had been the last girl to be searched, had she not?O bserving the conversation going on in front of her, she noticed that the man in front of her seemed to become more and more agitated. Realizing that she could have a bit of fun with this, she bit down on her lip, hiding a mischievous smile that was threatening to explode, if she let it. Keeping up a facade of curiosity, she turned to the man standing in front of her. Sorry about interrupting, but I never actually got your name. she said, tilting her head to the side.B y now, a strand or so of hair had escaped from the knot, and a ringlet or two hung on either side of her heart shaped face. Twirling a strand around her finger, she continued. I remember you mentioning your name out on the weyr face, but with the events that happened after, well, I'm sure you would understand if I don't quite remember your name. Finishing her question, she took another sip from her drink, wondering how the man in front of her would reply to her question.[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

D'mon's eye twitched at the thought of convincing those-those children to stay and work instead of going home.Work was work, where ever those boys and girls ended up.He supposed the girls would be more motivated to stay,as they faced a life as a broodmare and cleaner. The bronze rider knew that the men wouldn't mind more women around, and he guessed he could put up with more twittering idiots in the Weyr.He opened his mouth to reply when Hatath did the work for him.The dragon's conscious sidled into Siten's gently and his deep soothing voice rumbled pleasantly. Lady Siten, he would be delighted. Mine needs to learn how to interact properly with young ladies,he's very sheltered. The bronze's voice was tinged with laughter as he confidentially told the Weyrwoman his rider's "secret".Red faced and stuttering,D'mon scolded Hatath lengthily in his mind.Still highly embarrassed, he was taken off guard by the blonde's snide question. His shoulders stiffened and his fingers curled just a bit.Internally he growled and turned to face her, resisting the urge to grind his teeth.Face pleasantly bland he replied "I am D'mon of bronze Hatath. I'm having a hard time recalling your name as well.It is rather difficult to keep up with names, especially with the amount of people I meet and converse with."

"I'm Siten," the woman replied to Ildessmor, flashing her a friendly smile.
Isiloth was slumbering, and she didn't particularly want to wake the little gold, but she felt that a reply was the very least that Hatath's gesture deserved, so she nudged her lightly with her mind. :What is it, Mine?: the hatchling murmured blearily.
'Sorry to wake you, little love, but Hatath has done me -- done us -- a favor, and I want to thank him,' Siten sent to the dragon, along with a wash of affection.
:Hatath? What favor? Why does he need thanks?:
'Because it is polite. You don't have to be sweet to be polite, little love, and it shows that you're better than those who can't be to be polite, whether someone asks for it or not.'
Isiloth considered this for a long moment before finally consenting with a mild, :What do you want me to tell him?:
Verbatim, the young dragon relayed to Hatath, :I and mine thank you for your assistance. Your helpfulness will not be forgotten.: Despite her extremely polite words, however, there was an icy, distant quality to the young dragon's voice.
:Can I go back to sleep, now, mine?:
'Yes, dearest.'
Aloud, Siten turned to D'mon and smiled brightly. "Perhaps you would be so kind, since, as of tomorrow, Isiloth and I will be in effective isolation, to seek out and speak with those candidates who did not Impress? I will, of course, be seeking those I can out, tonight, but after that, I'm afraid that I'll be rather handicapped for a while, and your aid would be greatly appreciated. Surely having a bronzerider speak with them will mean something to the candidates?" she suggested mildly.

ldessmor let a small half smile creep onto her face as she heard the other man speak. Oh, I can't even begin to imagine how many young ladies you meet on a day to day basis. she said, nodding her head towards him as she tried to keep a straight face. And I just can't imagine any young lady that wouldn't be bowled over by your... advances. she finished, keeping her face neutral and pleasant. Ildessmor was having way too much fun right now, baiting the man in front of her. After all, he had terrified her to no end, but now that she was back in the weyr, he couldn't exactly try to harm her in public, could he? And with Siten's advice, she would only go out riding with companions now. Besides, in the worst case scenario, his dragon would keep him in check.B owing her head, she sank down into a graceful curtsy, using the hand that wasn't holding a glass of punch to pick up her skirt. My name is Ildessmor, kind sir. she finished, giving the bronze rider her own name. Oh, how fun it was to taunt the baited bear, especially since she knew a secret that could destroy his reputation. Then again, it wasn't like he really had one to begin with, now did he?H earing Siten speak, she turned in surprise to look at the other girl. Oh, I completely forgot that you won't be able to converse with the other candidates for a few months! she said, surprised. She had genuinely forgotten about that particular custom, and if it had been Ildessmor, she would have found it quite tiresome to not be able to talk to other people her age for a while. Although she could imagine what a bond with a dragon must feel like, it still must be quite annoying to have nobody your age or species to talk to.[/blockquote][/blockquote][/blockquote]

D'mon smiled with fake civility as he took in the Weyrwoman's words.Of course he would be saddled with the duties of the Candidate master.Internally he scoffed at the idea that a bronze rider would stoop so low just to prove his worth to the new Gold rider. But he nodded his handsome head and accepted her assignment. It was a test, and one he would pass with flying colors. But then he was reminded of the wench he had tried to take advantage of.Darn holdbred brat! He wished he could punch the smirk off of her face. But now she was weary and he would be more cautious in his bedmates.Almost growling and eyes blazing, he responded with fake humility. "If only that were true, Lady Ildessmor." He shook his head ruefully. "Dragon riders do not have the appeal they once did." In that last comment,he could not hold back the passion and ambition in his voice.
****
Back in his weyr, Hatath was stunned when the gold spoke to him.The words were polite, but the tone was frosty. But Hatath understood. She was a Queen, and Golds always kept up the appearance of aloofness. He hummed happily in response to the gold, knowing she was tired from her first day out of egg and he didn't want to wake her with his thanks. To Siten, however he sent a grave message I am loyal to the Weyr and its Queens first and foremost.I will help you in anyway I can.

Siten nodded somberly to Ildessmor. "Which is why I will need your help, as well, Ildessmor. You are a candidate, and one in much the same position as the others. You understand where everyone else is at, right now. They may be impressed by the words of a bronzerider, but they will be empathetic to the words of a fellow. You are someone that they will be able to relate to, and if anyone is to truly believe that they are needed and wanted, they must understand the situation to its fullest. I need you to help me show it to them."
For the first time that evening, D'mon had spoken words with which Siten could not have agreed more heartily, and something flashed in her eyes when he spoke them, tugging a very genuine smile across her face. "Dragon kind has always paid a high forfeit for the sake of Pern, Bronzerider, but you could not have spoken more accurately in that the sacrifices of the breed have long since been forgotten. Perhaps the time has come to remind the world of just how much dragonmen and dragonwomen have given to keep them safe: of the lives extinguished and the sufferance undergone." The smile brought life to her face, and she turned that brilliant smile full force on D'mon.

Another first for the evening, D'mon actually smiled genuinely at Siten.Oh the beauty of the girl's grin! And the strength of her ambitions! How marvelous! Simply marvelous. "Lady Siten, that is one of the best suggestions I've heard all night!" He lowered his voice and moved closer to the Queen's rider. "It is time we were liberated from the Holds.Dragons should not fly the skies in fear, but rule them supremely and without question. If you can help us toward that future, Hatath and I are tools to be used as you see fit."
((Sorry it took so long.D'mon is not speaking to me.It also explains this craptastic post.))

Siten's smile never faltered, nor did her enthusiasm, as she replied, "While I cannot say I necessarily agree with any 'supreme' rule, I will not have Isiloth fly skies where her very life depends on the self-involved satisfaction of those who do not, as I did not, ere she hatched, understand just how precious a thing they are endangering, or, perish the thought, destroying. It is not the place of the dragon to fear the bolt, and I can fathom far better uses for that wood than indulging in weapons with no other purpose than to shoot dragons from the sky. There is much injustice in the way that things are done, and if I have my way, it will be undone. I am grateful for your aid, as, I'm certain, Isiloth will be, when she wakes."
((No worries. We all have short reply days.))

Ildessmor listened to the conversation between the two of them, and was surprised when Siten asked if she would help her out. "Oh, but of course. I'll help it any way that I can." she said, agreeing with Siten. The idea appealed to her too, from her walks around the weyr, she had noticed an abundance in men, but a lack of females.

D'mon nodded to Siten and was cut short by a rather loud yawn.He was quick to cover his mouth so as not to offend the ladies.Plotting and being the perfect bronze rider took a lot of work and D'mon suddenly felt very tired. He took one last sip of wine and then set the cup down on a nearby table. The drudges would get it after all,it was their job.He decided that he would take his leave now, before he embarrassed himself further tonight. He bowed to both maidens and excused himself. Sorry to cut our conversation short, but for proper planning, a person needs rest and a clear mind.

"Thank you, Ildessmor," Siten replied to the girl sincerely. Every bit of help would be significant, and she did want some allies among the candidates. Ildessmor seemed a good place to start.
With a polite smile to D'mon, she added, "Of course--and I am certain the night's festivities will endure for quite some time more, but it is growing late. Thank you, again, for your assistance. We will no doubt be discussing the matter more in the future. Please, feel free to have your Hatath contact me any time you need." She wanted to see this happen, and she was willing to work for that. If that meant being roused at unholy hours for Hatath relaying messages, then so be it.
