-Five Sentences equal One Paragraph-
Appearance: Garnek is a gangly 6’3” and not yet comfortable in his height. The fact that his legs and arms both still seem to be too long for his body indicates he has some growing to do yet, despite the unusual height. Despite the awkwardness of his still growing body, Garnek still manages to charm most girls with his bright, full smile of nearly perfect teeth, if you don’t count the canine with the tip chipped off. His sparkling hazel eyes definitely don’t hurt in this matter. If only he would keep his unruly brown hair from shrouding them.
What people don’t see often is the matting of scars caused by an ‘accident’ when he was eight turns old. They cover much of his back and the lower portion of his neck. Garnek doesn’t speak of them or reveal them to anyone. He prefers to keep them hidden in neutral shirts and pants that are meant to help him blend in and avoid attention. It might work if he weren’t so clumsy.
Personality: Though he could easily be a charmer with his looks, Garnek prefers to keep to himself. In fact he’s never shown interest in the opposite sex… or anyone for that matter. That’s not to say he isn’t friendly. In fact, that couldn’t be farther from the truth. He’s just not big on deep, long lasting friendships. After all, everyone dies someday and there’s no sense attaching yourself to someone just to be hurt when you lose them. However, despite this view, he has found himself attached to a few select and he remains ever loyal to them. He’d put his life on the line if it would help them.
Above and beyond his take on relationships of any sort, Garnek is the clumsiest soul you’ll ever meet. Underestimating the length of his limbs, he’ll often reach just a little too far and knock over his glass or be found tripping over his own two feet, literally. Usually injuries aren’t enough to send him running to the infirmary, but the clumsiness also made it difficult to learn a trade.
One thing you should never do if you wish to remain in conversation with Garnek is ask about his past. It is strictly off limits and this is the one thing that brings out the colder side of him. He will instantly become closed off and only offer one word responses if any.
History: Garnek grew up in a small nameless hold on the Nothern Continent until he was eight turns old. That was when the ‘accident’ happened. Everyone told him it was an accident at least; Garnek knew better. You see, at one point Garnek and his family lived happily. He had three brothers and two sisters. All of which were far more skilled than he except the youngest sister. She was sickly and Garnek spent more time caring for and watching over her than he did playing as a young boy should.
That day he came out of his sister’s room to see his older brother glowering at him. Afraid to ask what was wrong, he started towards the kitchen to get his young sister a drink. He couldn’t remember what happened after that. He was told that he’d tripped over a nearby pole holding a candle with a lantern. It flew across the room and caught his home on fire.
He was injured valiantly trying to get to his sister... And he had made it to the door way of their home when it collapsed on him, pinning him beneath the supports. His back was burned to the point that it was nothing but scars when it finally healed, but his efforts had indeed saved his sister. As he fell, he’d thrown her as far from the house as his small arms could manage. Being three turns younger than he and smaller and lighter from her illness, the girl had flown just out of reach of the flames.
Garnek knew he hadn’t tripped, but he didn’t know what had really happened, so he never said anything. His sister died three days after he awoke and two of his brothers were lost to the flames. After he healed, Garnek’s family moved to Fort Hold to try to start a new life. Garnek never got over the loss completely, though he didn’t let it turn him bitter. Instead, he clung to his mother and father as long as he could, while keeping the rest of the world at a distance.
Garnek lost his parents a few turns later to a disease that ran rampant in the hold. His remaining brother had already been searched by a dragonrider from the South. He didn’t miss him. His remaining sister was also taken by the illness a turn after his parents, leaving only him to rebuild his life this time. Not long after he found himself being offered the opportunity to stand at Northern Weyr as a candidate and chose to take it.
